10 facts to know about late Archbishop Olumakaiye

The Anglican Church of Lagos has announced the death of the Archbishop of Lagos Province, Anglican Communion and Bishop of Lagos Diocese, Most Reverend Humphrey Olumakaiye.

He was said to have died at the age of 53-year.

His demise was announced in a statement co-signed by the Synod Secretary, Ven. ‘Segun Ladeinde; and the Chancellor, Justice Adedayo Oyebanji on Monday.

Here are 10 other facts to know about Olumakaiye:

  1. He was the Bishop of Lagos and Archbishop of the Ecclesiastical Province of Lagos (Anglican Communion), Church of Nigeria until his death, having previously served as Bishop of Osun North-East.

2. He was made the Archbishop of Lagos Ecclesiastical Province on November 7, 2021, at the Cathedral Church of Advent, Life Camp, Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.

3. Olumakaiye was born to the Venerable and Mrs. T.A. Olumakaiye on January 28, 1969, in Okene.

4. The late Archbishop was born in the town of Idanre in the state of Ondo.

5. His education began in 1975 at St. Michael’s Primary School in Esie, and he continued in 1982 at Government Secondary School in Omu-Aran, Kwara State.

6. He left Omu-Aran in 1983 and finished his secondary school in 1986 at Cherubim Seraphim Secondary School in Ilorin.

7. Between 1991 and 1993, he earned his first degree in religious studies from the University of Ibadan. In 2001, he earned his master’s degree in religious studies. He went on to finish his education at the same university, earning a doctorate in Church History and Doctrine.

8. He was ordained as a priest by E.A. Ademowo, Bishop of the Ilesha Diocese, in December of the same year that he was made a deacon. This came after Olumakaiye had completed his training and Immanuel College of Theology degree.

9. In June 1993, he began serving as a pastor at Christ the Saviour Anglican Church in Cappa, Ilesa, Osun State.

10. Olumakaiye, at 40 years old, was elected as a bishop on May 22, 2009; he was ordained on July 12, 2009, in Yenagoa, Bayelsa state; and on July 16, 2009, he was installed as the first bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Osun North-East at Cathedral Church of St. Philip’s, Otan Ayegbaju.

Olumakaiye was married to Motunrayo Funke, a professor and the former head of the nutrition and consumer sciences department of the faculty of agriculture at Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Osun State, until his passing. They have Richard Tunbamise as a son.

Olumakaiye died following a brief illness on October 31, 2022, at the age of 53.
